Students in the Mass Communications class create HiLites, the Sheffield High School newspaper.
This journalism class is open to students in grades nine through twelve. The class meets in the fall of the year and focuses on producing the school newspaper. Students in this class are involved in all aspects of creating the paper and are expected to write, edit, layout, design, print, and deliver the HiLites.
In the past, the journalism classes have attended journalism conferences at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama Huntsville, and Columbia University in New York. At these conferences, students have the opportunity to attend seminars on journalism and compete in the areas of news writing, layout and design, and photography. In 2006, Sydney Prather, a Sheffield student won first place int he state wide photography contest at the ASPA converence at the University of Alabama.
